Magazine Cover Learner Response

1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBIs. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

Mark out of 15 for Media Language: 12

Estimated A Level coursework grade: A / B

WWW: This is a seriously impressive cover in terms of photography, typography and brand identity – it is absolutely approaching the top level we are aiming for next year. The requirement for A* at A Level is ‘approaching professional standards’ and there’s no doubt you are in that ballpark – the challenge now is developing the attention to detail that pushes you into the top level. The cover lines, the font choice and the central image are all so strong – lots to build on for your real coursework next year. I also think your evaluation is spot on (if perhaps slightly harsh on yourself!)

EBI: The only factor keeping you out of the top level is page design. Firstly, the cover line on the upper right extends slightly over the model’s face – this is something professional designers will always avoid. I also think the placement of cover lines isn’t quite right – they feel squeezed in the upper right but then there’s quite a bit of empty space below (either for more cover lines or to move the two you have further down). Compare that to your main cover line in the bottom left which is positioned perfectly with ideal font sizes.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.)

~Typography
~Title overlay
~mise-en-scene (Costume, jewellery)
~Central image shot (medium close-up)
~ Capturing the brand's identity

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?

~Make sure the cover line doesn't extend over the model's face.
~ Position the cover lines where space needs to be filled up.

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?

Make sure you pay attention to the little details such as the cover line positioning to be able to achieve the high band of marks.
