Industries: Ownership and control

Media conglomerate research 1) Type up your  research notes  from the lesson - what did you find out about your allocated media conglomerate? Selection of companies: Alphabet,  The Walt Disney Company,  Comcast,  21st Century Fox,  Meta,  Viacom,  News Corp,  Time Warner. If you were absent or didn't have time in the lesson to make these notes, research  any one  of the companies above and find examples of all the terminology outlined in the notes at the start of this blogpost. Alphabet: -Subsidaries: Google, Waymo, Verily, Google Fiber. These are all examples of Vertical Integration as all of Alphabet's subsidiaries are linked to technology and the internet. Alphabet does have convergence as Google is practically on every device available.  2) Do you agree that governments should prevent media conglomerates from becoming too dominant? Write an argument that looks at both sides of this debate. I believe that Governments should prevent media conglomerates from becoming too dom

Audience Theory 2- The effects debate

Theory questions and your opinion 1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence? I believe that the media is not responsible for anti-social behaviour as I think that comes down to what people the person is surrounding themselves with and how the child grew up, any other experiences that the person is experiencing life. For example certain people when they're feeling down do not want to talk to anyone as they prefer being alone. However I believe with violence it's the same but sometimes video games can encourage to aggression but I don't believe that it's only the media's fault other factors matter as well.  2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. I believe that when we see others doing certain things we copy them for example

Audience Theory 1: Blog Tasks

Hypodermic needle model 1) Read this  Mail Online article about the effects of videogames . How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model? The hypodermic needle theory suggested that the media injects information into the audience and can have a dangerous effect on us. This article suggests that playing a violent video game for an hour everyday can increase aggressive behaviour. Just a single session can encourage short term aggression this then can show long-term effects and encourage anger issues which links back to the hypodermic needle theory as the violent video game injects information and portrays violence on the screen which then impacts the gamer in a negative way resulting in anger issues and aggression.  2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone  criticise  this front page?  This Talk Talk hacking case reinforces the hypodermic needle theory as the 15 year old boy

Assessment 1: Learner response

  1) Type up your feedback in  full  (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). 23- C WWW: This is a solid first A level media assessment- well done! You are close to the upper levels in several questions so the challenge now is consistently reading level 3 or 4 using depth of analysis and more media theory.  EBI: Revise genre theory. Revise social class a little. Think about how you organise your writing (paragraphing, constructing an argument etc.)  2) Read  the mark scheme for this assessment carefully . Identify at least  one  potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment. Q1- Character's eyeline looking off screen suggests danger or threat- enigma code.  Q2- Both grounded in working class British culture but perhaps inadvertently reinforcing negative stereotypes around this.  Q3-  Neale "repetition and difference"- allows producers to evolve genre but maintain audience; Abercrombie " telev
