Teacher Feedback:

WWW: This is an excellent start to A Level Media – it really comes across strongly that you’ve studied the subject before and picked up a lot from your work with Mr Pall. Your blog answers are thoughtful and detailed – particularly in terms of Semiotics and Reading an image. Finally, your media consumption audit is reflective and if you can add the Guardian, Spotify podcasts and Prime to your media consumption then you will be flying. Keep up the good work!

EBI: I really like the fact you want to aim for an A grade in this subject – that will be a challenge from a grade 6 at GCSE but it’s absolutely possible. Make sure you are writing in real detail and explore the different possible meanings and interpretations of the texts we study. The other major aspect stepping up to A Level is theory so your Reception theory work (and Genre) will be a good opportunity to practise those skills.

What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?

I believe i have to develop my theory skills as theory is a very key/ important skill in media and having a very good knowledge of theory will definitely allow me to achieve that higher grade in media that i would like to achieve and in general help me understand any topic in media.

1) Type up your feedback in  full  (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). WWW: Q1 is a strong answer showing good analysis and knowledge of terminology. Now we just need to match that in Q2.  EBI: Social and cultural contexts: how do the adverts reflect society and culture? If you  didn't achieve full marks  in a question, write a bullet point on what you may have missed. Q1: 6/8 - The verbal codes (text) reinforce the gender roles expected in society, supporting Judith  Butler’s theory that gender is “a performance” – a pattern of repeated acts or rituals. Here,  the expectation that women should be ‘good girls’ while men are allowed to be ‘bad boys’  reinforces the restrictive gender roles that are set from childhood. OSP: The Voice CSP

Language and contexts Homepage Go to  the Voice homepage  and answer the following: 1) What news website key conventions can you find on the Voice homepage? -Images -Date -Menu bar -Subscribe button -Search bar -Social media links  2) What are some of the items in the top menu bar and what does this tell you about the content, values and ideologies of the Voice? The items on the top menu bar are News, Sport, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Competitions, Opinion and Faith. This tells us that the Voice wants to include Black talent and coverage in all the different topics surrounding news coverage. The fact that Sport is second in the menu bar suggests that possibly this is a key area Black people are under represented in and the Voice wants to give them a platform to share their accomplishments.  3) Look at the news stories on the Voice homepage.
